David's "Choralwerk" initially presents itself in traditional forms. It begins in a melodically lush, virtuoso, late-romantic style, in which the cantus firmus determines the structure. As the work progresses, the writing becomes more rigorous and monothematic, sharper and more codified. David's contrapuntal style signals the priority of the horizontal line over vertical chordal activity.
