Following this, however, I feel that the voice of the poem switches to a more intimate first-person view. In my setting for soprano I wanted to allow the roles to be reversed and have the musical setting convey Eve's urging of Adam to, "âbe not afraid. " I have rather ironically introduced a hypocrisy to my original intention when I decided to have my friend Chris Ramos sing this piece. The objective of stripping away the male centered viewpoint was inevitably shifted back into Whitmanâs original intent.
