She plans to marry the peasant boy Tonio, but first he must join the regiment to become eligible to be her husband. But when it emerges that Marie is in fact the long-lost daughter of a Marchioness, she is forced to leave the regiment and her mother promises her to a Duke. However Marie only has eyes for Tonio who has since been made an officer. She shocks her new family and friends with her coarse army ways, until her mother relents and allows her to marry her true love.
