Nick Palmer reveals his artistic imagination in his rendering of Psalm 137, "By the Rivers of Babylon. " Gently flowing keyboard triplets support the serene melody, creating a constant buoyancy in the words of the psalmist. The mood develops as the text recalls the demands of the Babylonians to "sing for us the songs of Zion. " The answer comes back as a plaintive reply that floats above whole-note chords, allowing the response to be heard as a mournful cry to God to vindicate the people. The triplet pattern returns. the men sing the melody this time and are gracefully accompanied by three-part women's voices. This evocative piece will be treasured by singers, accompanists, directors, and listeners alike.
