This work is in the form of six separate movements which can be performed individually or as a set. The blues character is maintained throughout the six preludes. the first and fourth are “cool,” while the third and fifth are “hot. ” The second is “slick” and the last is “down. ” The idiom is atonal, but the blues focus in the work is made clear by the melodic rhythm and the voice leading.
