Andrew Boysen based this fantasy on the opening bars of John Philip Sousa's 1908 march, "Fairest of the Fair. " Snippets of the theme are disguised in the opening low brass chorale. Melodic fragments are tossed between instrumental sections, and the work closes with a triumphant return to the opening chorale melody.
