Joseph M. Horvath is due to celebrate his 80th birthday in December. Born in Pecs, but relocating to Vienna during the Hungarian Uprising of 1956, Horvath is a supreme craftsman and dazzling contrapuntalist. His five-movement, ten-minute Latin setting of Psalm 130 (Out of the deep) is both disturbing and exhilarating. The choral writing is only appropriate to programming by the most resolute and finely tuned of chamber choirs, and this is not a piece that will achieve massive popularity with either singers or listeners (although alto trombonists will surely welcome it with open arms). If you're a choir that has successfully navigated the choppy waters of Schoenberg's Friede auf Erden, then Horvath's post-constructivist De profundis might be for you.
